Relationships, Sex and Health Education
Intent
At Waterfield Primary School, we teach Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) as a whole-school approach to underpin our children’s development as well-rounded global citizens, who have the skills and resilience to manage the world around them in order to excel and achieve socially, emotionally, academically and economically. We know that for children to be successful with their learning, they at first need to feel safe and secure emotionally and feel a sense of belonging with their environment, peers and adults. We value RSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings; enabling them to understand and respect who they are; empowering them with a voice; and equipping them for life and learning. The Jigsaw scheme of work provides a comprehensive, carefully planned curriculum which brings consistency to our approach and progression of skills and knowledge to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.
Implementation
In the Early Years, PSHE and citizenship are taught as an integral part of topic work and are embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals.
During Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the statutory RSHE guidance. Pupils are taught PSHE using ‘Jigsaw’ which is a progressive, spiral scheme of work, covering all of the above and ‘aims to prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world’. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience.

The Jigsaw programme divides the year into 6 themed units:
Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Differences (including anti-bullying)
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)
It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and protected characteristics.
Children are encouraged to engage in activities that promote an understanding of themselves as growing and changing individuals, and as members of the wider community of Bewbush Crawley an the United Kingdom, based on their own first-hand experiences. These activities also encourage pupils to understand how their choices and behaviours can affect others. They are encouraged to play and learn alongside – then collaboratively with – their peers. Children are also given the opportunity to make choices about their health and environment and are encouraged to develop a caring attitude towards others.
Additional PSHE sessions are planned and delivered in response to any emerging needs, such as children falling out or concerns over safety in the real or online world.
